Taylor Russell McKenzie, who was born in Vancouver on the 18th of July 1994, was raised in Toronto and Vancouver. Russell was the daughter of a black dad and a white mother. She grew up with her mom's family. She told me that as a young girl she was not accepted by her peers due to the shade of her skin. [3] Her parents were struggling financially and had to move 16 times to work for her father. Russell was candid about how despite the difficulties, Russell said that she had always been creatively inclined from the age of a child. She hoped to be ballet dancer, then to become an artist. When she was 18, she attended her first acting class and finally found her place. She saved her money from work to purchase a car and drove to Los Angeles to audition. As her funds ran out then she would go back home to work, until she was able to earn enough to go back to the audition. This routine was followed for four years, until she was offered her first TV role.
