Anita Saarkessian
Anita Sarkeesian (Canadian-American) is a feminist media critic also a speaker who is Canadian. She created Feminist Frequency, a site with videos and comments analysing the way women are depicted in pop media. Anita Sarkeesian is an award-winning feminist media critic from Canada, as well as a blogger. She was the co-creator and executive director of Feminist Frequency a non-profit educational website that focuses on the role of women within popular stories of culture. In her efforts to dispel the myths associated with women in popular culture, she also tries to raise issues related to targeted harassment against women, as well as the marginalized groups of online area. With a master's in politics and sociology from York University Sarkeesian is also well-known as a sought-after speaking engagement and has given speeches at TEDxWomen XOXO Festival and also the United Nations' Broadband Working Group on Gender. From an early age she was captivated by issues of gender identity and feminist thinking. As a student, in 2009, she founded the Feminist Frequency web site. A woman who was ambitious was planning to launch a web series which would explore the role of gender in games. But, she discovered herself in the middle of a cyber-bullying campaign. Although the incident did hinder her, instead it strengthened her determination as a feminist critic of media. Her numerous contributions to the feminist field has been acknowledged by many awards. Anita Sarkeesian is an award awarded media critic, and founder of Feminist Frequency an educational organization exploring the role of women within pop culture storylines.
