Her great-grandfather John Pendleton Roberts, a farmer, was one of the first Roberts to move to Atlanta. She inherited her father's interest in theater from a young age. As studying at Emory University in 1952 he performed in shows on campus as well as in other parts of Atlanta. While stationed in Biloxi in Mississippi, he was inducted into the airforce in 1953. Betty Lou Bredemus was also in the production. In 1955, the couple married and their child Eric Anthony was born. Walter as well as his spouse quit the Air Force in 1957, when they enrolled Walter as a student at Tulane University. Walter was a part of the Atlanta Academy Theater and Harrington Scenic and Lighting Studio when they moved their family from Atlanta to Georgia's Decatur in 1960. Walter and Betty Lou started production in 1964 for the local Saturday morning children's show on television called Bum Bum and His Buddies, which they funded themselves. The Actors and Writers Workshop was founded in 1964 and ran for six years. In 1965, they welcomed two new children: Lelisa Billingsley and Julia Billingsley.
